The US and Australian embassies in Malaysia have warned their citizens to keep away from a popular street in the capital, Kuala Lumpur, amid fears of a potential terrorist attack.
In an advisory issued on Thursday, the US embassy said that it has information of a credible threat, urging the American citizens to avoid Alor Street, a well-known place of gathering for hawkers located in the city center, as well as its immediate surrounding areas.
For all other locations, the US embassy in Kuala Lumpur “reminds US citizens of the need for caution and awareness of personal security,” the alert further said.
The advisory added that in the past, terrorist organizations had planned to carry out attacks on dates that coincide with historical events but did not provide more details.
The Australian embassy also followed suit and urged its citizens to steer clear of the street.
“Due to a possible terrorism threat, Australians are advised to avoid Kuala Lumpur’s Jalan Alor (Alor Street) and the immediate surrounding areas,” read an alert on Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade website.
Daesh in Malaysia
Over the past two years, Malaysia has purportedly arrested more than 100 supporters of the Daesh terrorist group, some of whom are charged for conspiring against the country’s security.
In August, Malaysian security forces arrested 10 individuals suspected of having ties with the Takfiri group. A kindergarten teacher, members of security forces and a number of civil servants were among the detainees.
Malaysian Police said that the suspects were held for charges such as fundraising for Daesh, recruitment of Malaysian extremists for the group and getting weapons to conduct attacks in Kuala Lumpur and other strategic targets in various parts of the country.
