The Russian embassy in Syria has been targeted by shelling from foreign-backed militants operating in the capital Damascus.
"A mortar shell fell on the grounds of the Russian Embassy in Damascus at around 9 a.m. on September 20. It went deep into the ground without causing any damage," Russia's Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Monday.
"Efforts are underway to find out how the shell had got into the hands of militants," the ministry added.
The ministry said the shelling was carried out from the direction of Jobar neighborhood, where the anti-government militants are based.
"We ... condemn the criminal shelling of the Russian diplomatic presence in Damascus. We await a clear standpoint on this terrorist act from all members of the international community, including regional actors," it said
The Russian embassy in Damascus had been targeted by shells on prior occasions in recent months.
In May, one person was killed by mortar rounds that landed nearby. Also in April, three were injured when mortar rounds landed inside the compound.
The Kremlin lends support to Damascus in its fight against terrorism.
This as the US and its regional allies such as Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, are accused of being staunch supporters of the Takfiri elements operating against the Syrian government.
