Families of Iraqi forces fighting ISIL must be protected: Iraqi cleric

A spokesman for Iraq’s prominent Shia cleric Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani has called upon the government in Baghdad to do more to protect the families of the army troopers as well as those of the volunteer forces fighting against Takfiri ISIL militants across the country.

It is not logical or acceptable that the fighters, soldiers or volunteers who are sacrificing themselves for the sake of Iraq leave their loved ones and families under the protection of some security forces, who may, through betrayal or negligence, have the families fall victim to the ISIL, Abdul-Mahdi al-Karbalaie said on Friday.

“The government is strongly urged to implement a firm policy and strictly punish those elements proved to be involved in such criminal activities or those who fail to honor their commitments,” Karbalaie added.

He also urged Iraqi authorities to implement tough measures aimed at catching and brining to justice those who launch deadly attacks against innocent civilians.

The remarks come as Iraqi military aircraft carried out precision strikes against terrorist hideouts in the al-Rashad district of the town of al-Karmah, situated about 48 kilometers (30 miles) west of the capital, Baghdad, on Thursday. A total of 17 ISIL extremists were killed in the aerial attacks.

Fighters from Popular Mobilization units also managed to liberate the al-Jarrah Village northeast of Fallujah, which itself is located roughly 69 kilometers (43 miles) west of Baghdad.

Commander of Samarra Operations Major General Emad al-Zahiri said 10 ISIL terrorists were killed after Iraqi fighter jets struck an area west of the holy shrine city of Samarra. Three vehicles belonging to ISIL terrorists were also destroyed.

Iraqi security forces launched a barrage of artillery rounds at ISIL positions in the al-Sabihat and al-Na’miyah regions of Karmah, killing seven ISIL Takfiris.

The northern and western parts of Iraq have been plagued by violence ever since Takfiri ISIL militants began their march through the Iraqi territory in June 2014.

The heavily-armed terrorists took control of Mosul before sweeping through parts of the country’s heartland.
