The United States plans to impose its same-sex marriage policy to the rest of the globe is unlikely to prove successful, says Alexei Pushkov, the head of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs.
The Russian top official (seen below) made the remarks at the Public Chamber hearings on the occasion of the United Nations' 70th anniversary on Tuesday, Interfax reported.
"A huge stratum of humankind will refuse to accept these new values, but this does not stop the U.S. which has already said that one of the main goals of its policy will be to globalize, to universalize same-sex marriages," he said.
Pushkov further predicted that the US would not even use the legal framework for the move and would instead resort to “pressure”.
"And here, I think, it will act, of course, not through the UN mechanisms, but through its own inherent ones such as unilateral pressure and by imposing these principles on other countries. But I think this policy will not be successful," he said.
US President Barack Obama wants to “universalize” same-sex marriage, Pushkov said. “But I think this situation will stop at the Middle East because [of] Muslim societies… But that does not mean the attempt will not be made."
The US Supreme Court ruled last Friday that gay couples can get married in any US state, ending a ban on same-sex marriage in the 14 states remaining.
