Report: Pentagon officers use government credit cards for gambling

An audit found out that Pentagon employees were paying for gambling sprees and escorts with government credit cards.

Pentagon officials have been caught red-handed using the agency’s credit cards for personal spending on gambling and “adult entertainment”, according to a report.

An audit of “Government Travel Charge Transactions” by the agency’s Inspector General has found a substantial number of both civilian and military employees used their government-issued credit cards at casinos and for escort services as well as other adult activities in Las Vegas and Atlantic City.

An official briefed on some of the findings said the misuse of the cards--meant to be used for travel related expense--was an attempt by the employees to hide the prohibited purchases from their spouses.

The purchases cost the government hundreds of millions of dollars a year. The individuals spent $96,576 at "adult entertainment establishments."

“Clearly the behavior displayed by these individuals neither comports with our values nor represents the good service of the vast majority of or service members or DOD [Department of Defense] Civilians," the official said.

"While any misuse of the card is taken seriously, the amount of this misuse is extremely small given the size and scope of the Department of Defense travel charge card program."

The employees are liable to be dismissed under at 2012 law that requires federal agencies to beef up oversight of purchases on government-issued credit cards.

A Pentagon spokeswoman admitted the existence of the audit but refused to comment on it, saying she was not authorized to speak about it until its release.

The audit is to be made public later this month.
