NRA distorts 2nd Amendment to prevent bans on dangerous guns: Activist

The NRA is misleading the American public to prevent the banning of “some of the most dangerous guns” in the US, says an activist from Washington.

The gun lobby in the United States is projecting a flawed interpretation of the Second Amendment to prevent the banning of “some of the most dangerous guns” in the country, says an activist.

“It bothers me that that type of extremism is talking about Second Amendment rights, because Second Amendment rights have nothing to do with product purchase,” Susanne Posel, chief editor from Occupy Corporatism, said in an interview with Press TV on Thursday.

Posel believes the National Rifle Association is distorting the facts of the Second Amendment of the US Constitution by making the public believe the US government is after taking away “the right to bear arms.”

“The Second Amendment does not give us the right to purchase any type of gun, it says a gun, it says the right to bear arms,” she said.

“The NRA confuses that and says, ‘Oh, they are taking away your Second Amendment rights away’ by wanting to take some of the most dangerous guns out there.”

Her comments came in response to questions about a report from the US-based political magazine Mother Jones which has estimated the true cost of gun violence in America to be nearly $229 billion annually.

That amounts to $700 per American each year in direct and indirect costs according to the 3-year investigation.

The direct costs of firearm-related crimes amounts to $8.6 billion a year, said the study conducted with the help of Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation economist Ted Miller.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 11,000 people are murdered with a firearm each year in the United States, and more than 20,000 others commit suicide using one.

Furthermore, hundreds of children die annually in gun homicides when toddlers accidentally shoot themselves or a sibling with an unsecured gun.
