Malaysia PM to critics: I only answer to people

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak has reacted strongly to allegations of corruption and intolerance of dissidence, nixing the prospect of his resignation.

“I was elected by my party, and by the people of this country, to lead them. As such, I am answerable only to the people -- not to any one individual,” Najib said in an interview broadcast late Thursday.

He faces a call to step down by his predecessor, Mahathir Mohamad, who has asked him to provide answers concerning the state investment fund, dubbed 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), which is USD 11 billion in debt and has been the source of a financial scandal for the administration.

“I recognize that there are a number of questions swirling around 1MDB. Some of these questions are valid, but there are others that appear to be directed at the company solely with the intention of creating controversy,” Najib said.

The Malaysian administration has also come under criticism for passing a tough anti-terrorism act this week, which allows authorities to detain suspects without charge, as well as toughening penalties under a sedition law.

Najib, however, said, “Contrary to what some are suggesting, these laws will not be used against critics of the government.” “Rather, they will be an extra tool for dealing with the militant threat that all countries face.”

Najib came into office in 2009, promising clean government and a more relaxed rule.
