Iraq spearheading fight against ISIL: Iran VP

Iran’s First Vice President Es’haq Jahangiri(L) meets with Ibrahim al-Jaafari, the Iraqi foreign minister in the Iraqi capital , Baghdad, on February 17, 2015.

Iran’s First Vice President Es’haq Jahangiri says Iraq is fighting against the ISIL Takfiri militants on behalf of the entire international community, reiterating the Islamic Republic’ support for its western neighbor.

“Iraq is fighting the ISIL terrorist group on behalf of the entire world and I hope that this land would be cleansed of terror groups,” Jahangiri said in a Tuesday meeting with Ibrahim al-Jaafari, the Iraqi foreign minister and the head of National Iraqi Alliance, in Iraq’s capital, Baghdad.

Jahangiri also commended Iraqi forces, government and people, over the recent gains made against the ISIL extremists wreaking havoc on the Arab country.

The Iraqi nation deserves to enjoy economic welfare, security and peace and to play an influential role in the region and world, Jahangiri added.

He further reaffirmed the Islamic Republic’s support for the Iraqi nation, expressing Tehran’s preparedness to share its experience with Baghdad in different areas.

Jaafari, in turn, described the relations between Iran and Iraq deep-rooted and called for the further expansion of ties between the two neighboring nations.

He further said Iran acts as a model of peaceful convergence between different ethnic groups, stressing that the Iraqi nation should follow the example of Iran and stand united in the face of enemies.

The top Iraqi diplomat further described the ISIL as a threat not just to Iraq, but to the Middle East region and the entire world.

He also appreciated Iran’s stance on backing Iraq, calling on the Islamic Republic to keep up its support for the Arab nation.

The heavily-armed ISIL militants took control of the northern Iraqi city of Mosul in June 2014 before sweeping through parts of the country’s Sunni Arab heartland. The Takfiris had earlier captured some areas in neighboring Syria.

The terrorists have been carrying out horrific acts of violence, including public decapitations, against all communities such as Shias, Sunnis, Kurds and Christians.

Iraqi soldiers, police units, Kurdish forces, Shia volunteers and Sunni tribesmen have succeeded in driving the ISIL terrorists out of some areas in Iraq.
