“Israel's destabilizing presence”
Iran says it regards Israel as an illegitimate regime and expansion of its presence in the region as the main cause of instability there. The foreign ministry spokesman says Tehran has always raised the issue in its meetings with regional countries. Nasser Kana’ani says Tehran has also emphasized the necessity of support for the Palestinian nation and the resistance front during the meetings. According to Kana’ani, the Islamic Republic considers Palestine the main issue of the Islamic world. Iran has repeatedly warned that it will not tolerate Israeli presence in the Persian Gulf region after two regional countries signed normalizations agreements with the regime.
Gabon military rule
In Gabon, the leader of a recent coup that ousted president Ali Bongo has been sworn in as interim president by constitutional court. In a ceremony attended by Gabonese military officers and officials, Brice Oligui Nguema pledged “free” and “transparent” elections in the country. His appointment puts an end to over half a century of the Bongo dynasty rule over the oil-rich central African country. Gabon becomes the sixth African country after Mali, Guinea, Sudan, Burkina Faso and Niger that has undergone a coup in the last three years. The former colonial power, France, has joined other western countries to condemn the latest developments in Gabon. France has also suspended its military cooperation with the new rulers in Liberville.
UK economic woes
In the UK, a spotlight shines on various issues, from infrastructure concerns in crumbling school buildings to the economic strain caused by rising home rents. New data shows the rise in home rents in the UK is taking a heavy toll on people living in deprived areas. According to the estate agent Hamptons, there has been an over 50% increase in monthly rents in poor areas across the country over the past four years. That’s while the rental costs in the wealthiest regions have risen by nearly 30% in the same period. Experts say economic woes have forced many people to move to cheaper areas, causing rises in monthly rents in those districts. In the meantime, the education minister has warned that hundreds of school buildings are crumbling and unsafe.
