The Blue Samurai killed off the contest shortly after the break when Junya Ito netted the ball with a powerful shot from the edged of the box. With the victory, Japan kept their hopes alive for the two automatic qualifying spots with two games remaining, as Australia were held to a 2-all draw by Oman.
Japan now sit second in Group B with 18 points, three points above Australia.
