The national Iranian men’s handball team has chalked up a narrow win at the 17th edition of the Asian Men’s Handball Championship in Bahrain, edging past the United Arab Emirates.

On Saturday evening, the Iranian squad ended its campaign at the group stage of the continental tournament, and overcame the Emirati side 34-32 in a game played at Khalifa Sports City Stadium, also known as Isa Town Stadium, in Isa Town.

The win was the Iranian outfit’s third at the ongoing Asian handball championship.

Iran sealed an emphatic win against China by two-fold points in a highly spirited match on January 19, and breezed past the Asian team 36-18.

The Persians had earned a hard-fought victory over Lebanon two days earlier, defeating the West Asian squad 31-26.

The Iranian squad suffered its second defeat at the ongoing Asian handball championship on Friday, losing to host Bahrain 27-16 in a Group B match.

Iran men’s national handball team has lost to Saudi Arabia 21-26 on January 15.

Japan, Oman, South Korea and Syria were in Group A of the Asian Men’s Handball Championship.

Iran was drawn in Group B along with host Bahrain, China, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

The top two teams in each group will qualify for the knock-out stage, where winners will face off for the gold medal and losers settle for the third-place fixture, both scheduled for January 28.
