Naked racism in Hollywood (Part I)
Today Islamophobia is alive and well in Hollywood and TV industry. Although nearly one-quarter of the world’s population is Muslim, Hollywood categorically stereotypes and vilifies Muslims and Islam.
Over years, Hollywood movies have instilled in the American psyche a fear of Islam, promoting it to be tantamount to terrorism. Muslims are culturally coded as “others,” a dislocated social position which many politicians and media producers have used to place them as phantom enemies, as scapegoats for latent US xenophobic tendencies.
An important factor that can influence Hollywood bias against Muslims is visibility. Muslims are “hypervisible,” in representations and discourses about terrorism, but are less visible in everyday life. In most of Hollywood movies, there is a minimal sign of Muslims as ordinary people.
