A man has been shot dead after opening fire on security forces near the Israeli embassy amid rising anti-Zionist sentiments in Jordan.

A security source and state media said a gunman fired at a police patrol in the Rabiah neighborhood near the Israeli embassy in Amman on Sunday.

Police had earlier cordoned off the area near the heavily fortified embassy after shots were heard, ordering residents to stay in their homes as security forces searched for the shooter(s), the security source was quoted as saying by media.

The anti-Israeli sentiment in the Arab country has escalated since October 7, 2023, when the Zionist regime launched its genocidal war against the people in the Gaza Strip in neighboring Palestine.

In the past, Jordanian security forces have used tear gas to disperse pro-Gaza protesters marching on the Israeli embassy in Amman.

A deadly shooting incident in 2017 in the embassy compound left two Jordanians dead and an Israeli embassy guard wounded.
