Protesters in Peru have set fire to a police station and judicial office after two people were killed and another was seriously injured by security forces, as the country continues to see some of its worst political crisis in recent decades.

Peruvian president Dina Boluarte has said that she will not step down amid deadly protests.

Thousands of Peruvians took to the streets of the capital Lima in protest against the new president on Thursday, as anti-government demonstrations triggered by the ousting of former president Pedro Castillo grip the country.

Peruvians have clashed with police after taking to the streets to demand the resignation of President Dina Boluarte and reinstatement of Pedro Castillo who was ousted in December. 

Police used tear gas to disperse protesters trying to approach Peru's Congress headquarters on Wednesday.

The temporary detention of former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo in prison has been extended to 18 months, amid escalating diplomatic disputes with leftist countries.
