In "resolute solidarity" with the people of Palestine, the Maldives Parliament has approved legislation ratified by President Mohamed Muizzu to ban the entrance of Israelis into the country.

President Muizzu announced on Tuesday that the country banned the entry of the Israelis into the archipelago, calling the move a “firm stance in response to the continuing atrocities and ongoing acts of genocide committed by Israel against the Palestinian people.”

President Muizzu ratified the legislation shortly after it was approved by the People’s Majlis (the Maldives Parliament).

He described the amendment as a “clear reflection of our stand against the ongoing atrocities in Palestine,” adding that the Indian Ocean nation “reaffirms its unwavering solidarity with the Palestinian people.”

“The Maldives continues to advocate for accountability for violations of international law and remains vocal across various international platforms in its condemnation of Israel’s actions,” the statement said.

“The ratification reflects the government’s firm stance in response to the continuing atrocities and ongoing acts of genocide committed by Israel against the Palestinian people,” his office said in a statement.

A spokesman for Muizzu’s office has said that the president firmly supports the legislation and the ban will take effect immediately.

President Muizzu has consistently reiterated the Maldives' principled support for the establishment of an independent and sovereign State of Palestine in accordance with relevant United Nations resolutions and international legal norms, the spokesman said.

Both government supporters and opposition parties have been pressuring Muizzu to ban the Israelis as a statement of opposition to the Gaza war.

Although the Maldives has had no diplomatic ties with Israel since the 1970s, travel to the country was previously permitted to the Israelis. According to the legislation, the ban will remain in effect until Israel halts its 'actions' in Gaza.

Last year, around 11,000 Israelis visited the Maldives. Israel issued a travel warning in December due to rising anti-Israel sentiment amid the Gaza war.
