Iran-US indirect talks
Iran and the US have concluded the first round of indirect talks in Muscat on Tehran's nuclear program and sanctions removal. Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi mediated the talks between delegations led by Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi and US Special Envoy for West Asia, Steve Witkoff. In a statement, the Iranian Foreign Ministry said the 2.5 hour discussions took place in a constructive atmosphere marked by mutual respect. The Ministry added that the talks will continue next week.
US-Israeli Gaza genocide
The Israeli military has fully encircled Gaza's southern city of Rafah as part of its genocidal onslaught on the blockaded territory. The Israeli army released footage purportedly showing a brigade of troops marching past rubble and entering empty buildings in Rafah. The military had issued repeated evacuation orders to hundreds of thousands of Palestinians across Rafah since it resumed operations in Gaza on March 18. Meanwhile, the Israeli minister for military affairs said troops completed the takeover of a new corridor between Rafah and Khan Yunis. The ground offensive by the Israeli military comes amid relentless air and artillery attacks targeting different parts of Gaza. The Gaza Health Ministry says the death toll from the US-Israeli genocidal war on Gaza since October 2023 has risen above 50,900.
Slamming US ruling
Lawyers for pro-Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil have blasted the ruling by a US immigration judge to deport him from the country. The Columbia University student’s legal team said the government was punishing Khalil for his criticism of US support for Israel. Khalil’s attorneys also criticized the government’s case, stressing it lacked supporting evidence and targeted constitutionally-protected First Amendment activity. The legal team argued that the rushed hearing, held inside a jail complex, violated his right to due process. Khalil’s attorneys vowed to keep fighting for his release, calling the ruling weaponization of immigration law and aimed at silencing dissent. Khalil has been in custody since March 8, when immigration agents arrested him in front of his pregnant wife, who is a US citizen.
