Death toll from US airstrikes on Yemen’s Hodeida rise to 12

The screen grab shows people looking for survivors in the rubble following a US strike in the Hodeida governorate, Yemen, April 8, 2025.

The death toll from US airstrikes on a residential neighborhood in Yemen’s port city of Hodeida has risen to 12.

Yemeni media said the victims included six women and four children.

Dozens were also injured in the attack, which targeted the Hawak district on Tuesday.

Washington initiated its air campaign against Yemen on March 15 after Sana’a resumed retaliatory attacks on Israel in response to the regime’s resumption of the campaign of genocide in Gaza.

Since then, there have been near-daily US strikes targeting Yemen’s civilian infrastructure, including communication networks, power plants, and water reservoirs.

Washington has portrayed these strikes as an attempt to restore freedom of navigation in the waters around Yemen.

However, Yemen has rejected the US allegation that it poses a threat to international shipping in the Red Sea, saying it is solely targeting Israeli-linked ships.

The Yemeni military began targeting ships transiting the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, as well as those in the occupied territories, following the outbreak of the Gaza genocide in October 2023.

The Yemeni military spokesman Yahya Saree said on Wednesday that the military had downed a US drone, targeted an Israeli military site in the Tel Aviv area, and launched drones at the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman.
