Iran’s largest titanium plant ready for production: IMIDRO

Iran says its first large-scale titanium plant is ready for production after a seven-year building project.

Iran’s state metals and mining company IMIDRO says the first large-scale titanium plant in the country is ready for production.

A Saturday report by the Fars news agency said that IMIDRO had ended a seven-year construction project in the Kahnuj titanium mine, located in the southeastern province of Kerman, to enable the mine to launch its titanium processing facility.

The report said that the plant is expected to produce some 0.7 million metric tons (mt) of titanium slag per year, making Iran one of the key producers of the strategic metal in the region and around the world.

It said that IMIDRO had spent some 84.9 million euros ($91.8 million) on the construction of the titanium processing plant in Kahnuj, adding that the plant will allow Iran to cut its titanium imports to zero and even launch exports to other countries.

Iran has several small-scale titanium factories in its northeast.

IMIDRO resumed titanium mining in Kahnuj after a 25-year hiatus in 2023. The mine is believed to hold some 150 million mt of proven titanium reserves. It has created 500 jobs in a relatively impoverished region in Iran and produces some 0.13 million mt of titanium oxide each year.

Iran has launched extensive plans and projects in recent years to expand its mining sector amid efforts by the government to diversify the country’s economy away from oil exports.

Titanium has key applications in the aerospace, marine, and automotive industries. Experts say the major increase in Iran’s production of titanium could cement the country’s position as a producer of strategic metals while further boosting its relations with major consumers of titanium like China and Russia.
