Myanmar and Thailand declared a state of emergency after being hit by a deadly earthquake on Friday.
The powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck just outside Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, at 11:50 am (local time) at a depth of 10 kilometers. It also rocked neighboring Thailand and other parts of Southeast Asia.
Myanmar’s authorities said the death toll from the quake has surpassed 1,000 people, with more than 2,300 others injured and many missing.
In Thailand, at least 10 people were killed by the quake after a high-rise building collapsed in Bangkok. Scores more are still missing, mostly workers buried under the 33-story structure, which was under construction. Rescue workers are searching for survivors.
International relief efforts have started to pour into the country with rescuers and aid, including blankets, food, and search equipment arriving from neighboring China and India, as well as other countries.
