US ‘guarantees’ Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon before truce ends: Report

US special envoy Amos Hochstein has told Lebanese officials that Israeli troops will withdraw from southern Lebanon before the 60-day ceasefire comes to an end, according to a report.

Earlier this week in Beirut, Hochstein provided a detailed withdrawal schedule during a meeting with the committee in charge of monitoring the implementation of the ceasefire agreement, Al-Akhbar reported.

So far, the occupying regime’s military has withdrawn from just three of the dozens of areas in southern Lebanon where it continues to hold positions, a figure that includes the Monday withdrawal from Naqoura, where a UN peacekeeping mission is based.

The agreement which took place in November between the regime and Hezbollah stipulates that Israeli forces must leave Lebanon within 60 days, by January 26, in return for Hezbollah’s evacuation of the Litani River – about 30 kilometers (18 miles) from the border – and dismantling any remaining military infrastructure in the south.

Hezbollah’s new leader, Naim Qassem, said in a speech on Saturday that his group might begin attacking Israel again if the occupying troops did not fully withdraw from southern Lebanon before the 60-day period ends.

The occupying troops have been conducting near-daily attacks in Lebanon in violation of the ceasefire, including air strikes across the country, ground advances and the destruction of homes. Despite the attacks, Hezbollah has honored the agreement since it came into effect.

Civil Defense rescue teams continue to retrieve the bodies of Lebanese killed during the war. After nearly a year of low-level cross-border hostilities, the Israeli regime launched an all-out war in Lebanon, killing thousands of people and destroying large parts of the country.
