Between four and seven Israeli soldiers have been killed and an army general has been critically wounded in a "double ambush" by Palestinian fighters in northern Gaza, an Israeli report says.
"Early estimates of the number of deaths range from four to seven, with the toll expected to rise as the Israeli army struggles to evacuate casualties," an Israeli news website reported Sunday.
The deputy commander of the Nahal Brigade, a brigadier general, was seriously wounded in Beit Hanoun where an explosive device targeted the Israeli patrol followed by intense fighting, the report said.
Early media reports said four soldiers were killed by a powerful blast. According to Channel 12, the attack was a double ambush, involving both a landmine explosion and gunfire.
Reports from Israeli Hebrew platforms, however, said seven Israeli soldiers were killed, with around 30 others injured.
Among the fatalities were four soldiers from the Nahal Brigade, two from the Kfir Brigade, and one from the Givati Brigade, they said, adding that eleven of the injured soldiers were reported to be in critical condition.
They said the evacuation of the Israeli casualties has been hard for the Israeli forces facing heavy resistance from the Palestinian fighters on the ground. Images of helicopters evacuating the wounded and dead soldiers have circulated on social media.

The Israeli military is reportedly investigating the possibility that Palestinian fighters reached the area through an undiscovered tunnel.
Hamas's armed wing, the Qassam Brigades, alongside the armed wing of the Islamic Jihad, regularly targets the Israeli forces.
According to data released by the Israeli military, hundreds of soldiers have been killed since the regime unleashed a war on Gaza in October 2023.
