Lebanon’s Berri condemns Israel’s ‘flagrant violation’ of ceasefire

Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri

Lebanon’s Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri has censured the Israeli regime for its “flagrant violation” of the ceasefire.

“The aggressive actions carried out by Israeli occupation forces constitute a flagrant violation of the terms of the ceasefire agreement,” Berri, who had helped to mediate the ceasefire, said in a statement issued by his office on Monday.

Berri said at least 54 Israeli violations have been recorded since the ceasefire took effect.

The Lebanese Parliament speaker said the international committee tasked with monitoring the ceasefire had to “urgently” begin work to “oblige” the regime to pull its forces out of Lebanon.

Authorities said at least two Lebanese people were killed in Israeli strikes on southern Lebanon on Monday.

The conditions of the ceasefire, which came into effect on November 27, states that Israeli forces are not to carry out any strikes against civilian, military or other state targets in Lebanon.

An Israeli airstrike on the Lebanese town of Marjayoun, about 10 km from the border, left one person dead, Lebanon’s health ministry announced.

In an Israeli drone strike, according to Lebanon’s state security, a soldier was killed while on duty in Nabatiyeh.

In another Israeli violation of the ceasefire, the Lebanese army said a drone attack targeted an army bulldozer in the northeast near the border with Syria, wounding a Lebanese soldier.

The terms of the ceasefire deal stipulates that a mechanism hosted by the United Nations peacekeeping force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and chaired by the United States would “monitor, verify and assist in ensuring enforcement” of the truce.

Israeli media outlets reported on Monday that US special envoy Amos Hochstein, who brokered the truce, has issued a notification to the Israeli regime warning about its repeated violations of the deal.
