The Syrian army has launched a large-scale military operation against the positions of Takfiri terrorist groups in the country’s northwest, foiling four major attacks by terrorists.

The Syrian forces, backed by the Russian military, conducted airstrikes, targeting the headquarters, sites and vehicles of terrorist groups in the provinces of Idlib and Aleppo on Thursday.

They also took control of several areas, including the town of Al-Baqoum that had fallen to Takfiri terrorists, forcing them to flee.

The Syrian army also targeted the supply lines of armed Takfiri groups in the country’s northwest.

The operations come after members of Takfiri terror groups and their allied forces attacked several areas in Aleppo and Idlib for the second day in a row.

The Syrian army, in a statement carried by state news agency SANA on Thursday, said “a huge and large-scale terrorist attack, with large numbers of terrorists and using medium and heavy weapons”, had targeted villages, towns and military sites.

Lebanon's al-Mayadeen television network cited a Syrian source in Idlib as saying that HTS had directed all hospitals in the city and the northern countryside to stop surgeries and prepare to treat only the militants injured in the battles.

According to local sources, heavy fighting is still underway between the Syrian army and the terrorist groups in some areas.

On Wednesday, at least 400 terrorists were killed in Idlib and Aleppo.

The American forces have thus far sustained their illegal presence on the Syrian soil although Damascus and its allies defeated Daesh in late 2019.

The US military claims its presence in Syria is aimed at preventing the oilfields in the area from falling into the hands of Daesh.

Damascus, however, maintains the deployment is meant to plunder the country’s natural resources. US President-elect Donald Trump of the United States earlier admitted on several occasions that American forces were in the Arab country for its oil wealth.

Syria has been gripped by foreign-backed militancy since 2011 with Damascus blaming the Western countries and their regional allies for aiding the terrorist groups.

Russia, alongside Iran, has assisted Syrian forces in battles across the conflict-plagued country, mainly by providing aerial support to ground operations against foreign-backed terrorists.
