Hamas: ‘Ceasefire agreement in Lebanon can be prelude to truce in Gaza’

Senior member of Hamas Sami Abu Zuhri spoke in an interview on Iran’s Arabic language Al-Alam channel on Thursday.

A senior member of Hamas has said that there is complete coordination between the leaders of Hamas and Hezbollah and that the ceasefire agreement in Lebanon can be a prelude to the accord in Gaza.

In an interview on Iran’s Arabic language Al-Alam channel on Thursday, Sami Abu Zuhri said, “We support the right of Lebanon and Hezbollah to reach an agreement that protects the Lebanese people and stops the continuous aggression against them.”

He added that at the same time, Hamas also appreciates the greatness of Hezbollah in standing by the Palestinian people.

Abu Zahari said, “The Zionist occupiers have not been able to achieve any of their goals after 14 months.”

“They said that they wanted to return the settlers who left the northern lands of occupied Palestine, but they failed in this field as well. So by targeting civilians and mass killing people, and leaving ruins, they try to make themselves appear victorious,” he stated.

He pointed out that what is happening in Gaza from a humanitarian point of view is something that humanity has not seen in the current centuries.

“All medical capabilities in hospitals and health infrastructures are being deliberately targeted,” he said.

“In the north of the Gaza Strip, which has been under siege for nearly two months, only Kamal Adwan Hospital remains, which can provide health services, and in the north of the Gaza Strip, there is no medical equipment and materials to treat and save the injured,” he said.

He stated that every day there are dozens of martyrs and wounded as a result of the Zionist crimes, and the occupation forces prevent them from reaching the hospitals and prevent the rescue of the injured by ambulances.

Abu Zahari said that the people are suffering from displacement, hunger, rain, and cold, and “so today we say that it is a miracle that the people of Gaza have been able to resist for about 14 months despite all these difficult conditions.”

He added, “The problem is that the occupiers have control over the arrival of these aids, and only a small amount of them are coming in, which has caused an unprecedented and great famine in the Gaza Strip.”

“Also, one of our priorities is to maintain the strength of the Palestinian resistance, and by the grace of God Almighty, the resistance after 14 months is still standing, has a good capability, and is still capable of continuing to defend against the aggression of the Zionists,” he said.

He said that “every day we see the casualties of the soldiers of the occupying army and the destruction of their vehicles.”

Abu Zahari considered the effectiveness of the fronts aligned with the Gaza Strip as one of the priorities of the Hamas movement.

“Our brothers in Lebanon, Yemen, Iraq and Iran have done well in this regard and have made a great contribution in limiting the aggression of the Zionists and reducing the pressure on the strip.”

‘Hezbollah achieved a strategic success’

Meanwhile, a Hamas representative in Lebanon Dr. Ahmed Abdel Hadi told Al-Jazeera that Hezbollah has achieved a strategic success by thwarting Israel’s plans to gain field control over southern Lebanon.

Members of the Israeli regime considered the ceasefire agreement in Lebanon to be an Israeli failure, he added.

“The Palestinian resistance continues to carry out qualitative operations despite the massacres committed daily by the occupation in Gaza,” he said.

The resistance in Gaza has thwarted the Israeli generals' plan.

In early October 2023, Israel launched its bloody acts of terror and aggression across Lebanon after the occupying regime unleashed a genocidal war on the Gaza Strip.

At least 3,823 people were killed and 15,859 others injured in Israeli attacks on Lebanon.

In support of the oppressed Palestinians and Lebanese, Hezbollah conducted retaliatory attacks on targets in the occupied lands that led to the displacement of almost 70,000 Israeli settlers.

Earlier this week, the two sides agreed to a 60-day cessation of fighting brokered by the US and France.
