Iran, Saudi Arabia determined to establish endurable peace: Deputy FM

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht Ravanchi

A top Iranian diplomat says sustained bilateral and regional cooperation between Iran and Saudi Arabia plays a leading role in establishing endurable peace and stability in the region.

Iran and Saudi Arabia are determined to promote sustainable peace and stability in the region, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht Ravanchi said in an interview with Asharq al-Awsat newspaper during his visit to Riyadh last week.

He added that the two countries should strengthen sustained bilateral and regional cooperation to address current threats and build a foundation for prosperity and security.

He emphasized that joint efforts by Tehran and Riyadh serve as a “successful model of bilateral and multilateral cooperation” aimed at fostering peace, security, and development on both regional and international levels.

The Iranian diplomat said historical ties and the principle of good neighborliness are the basis for advancing mutual relationships.

In a post on his X platform on Monday, Takht Ravanchi said he had a "very constructive and fruitful" meeting with Saudi Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Waleed el-Khereiji, stressing that cordial mutual relations benefit not only both countries but also the entire West Asia region.

Takht Ravanchi and el-Khereiji discussed the improvement of bilateral relations in political, economic, and consular fields, and exchanged views about key regional and international issues.

Takht Ravanchi also participated in the second meeting of the Saudi-Chinese-Iranian trilateral committee held on Tuesday in Riyadh to follow up on the 2023 détente deal.

A statement issued by the three sides at the end of the meeting said Saudi Arabia and Iran welcomed the continued positive role played by China and the importance of its support and follow-up on the implementation of the Beijing Agreement that was signed in March 2023.

The accord, mediated by China, aims to restore diplomatic ties and promote mutual respect for sovereignty and security under the principles of the UN Charter, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and international law.

Takht Ravanchi, who previously served as Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations, described the atmosphere of the meetings as “cordial and transparent.”

He said Tehran, Beijing and Riyadh exchanged views on topics of mutual interest and stressed the importance of continuing this “positive and forward-looking process.”

He also hailed “constructive and friendly” meetings held by the Iranian delegation with their Saudi hosts and Chinese counterparts, during which they reviewed developments in relations over the past year.

Iran and Saudi Arabia resumed relations following a seven-year hiatus under a China-brokered deal in March 2023, which saw the two sides re-open diplomatic missions.
