Iran’s Defense Minister Brigadier General Aziz Nasirzadeh says he will hold talks with top Syrian officials on ways to expand defense and military cooperation during his visit to Damascus.
Nasirzadeh remarked to reporters upon his arrival in the Syrian capital on Saturday at the head of a delegation.
“We are going to meet with high-ranking political and military officials to examine various aspects of the bilateral relations between the two nations, with a particular focus on defense and military matters,” he said.
“Our objective is to identify strategies to enhance these sectors. Hopefully, the relations between the two countries will evolve in such a way that we can provide mutual assistance in sensitive situations.”
He noted that Syria has an important position in Iran’s foreign policy, saying he is visiting Damascus at the invitation of his Syrian counterpart.
During his two-day visit, Iran’s defense chief is set to meet with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Defense Minister Lieutenant General Ali Mahmoud Abbas and other military and political officials.
The two sides will discuss the leading role of regional countries in ensuring security in the region, the withdrawal of extra-regional forces enhanced bilateral cooperation to combat terrorism in all its forms, and the latest field situation of the resistance front.
Nasirzadeh’s visit comes a few days after Ali Larijani, a senior advisor to the Leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution, traveled to Damascus and held talks with top Syrian officials, including President Assad and Speaker of Syrian People's Assembly Hammoudeh Sabbagh.
