EU’s Borrell urges end to Israel war, unimpeded access to aid for Gaza

European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell

The European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell urges an end to Israel’s war on the Palestinians, release of the captives and an “unimpeded” access to humanitarian aid for the Gaza Strip.

In a series of posts on X on Monday, Borrell warned against the “deteriorating” situation in Gaza and in the occupied territories “by the hour” with “unbearable sufferings for civilians.”

Borrell said it was deplorable that “no one seems to be able or willing to stop this.”

Borrell censured increasing violence by “violent and extremist settlers”, who torched vehicles and damaged apartments in areas such as al-Bireh in the occupied West Bank on Monday.

He warned that “hospitals are besieged, UNRWA's activities more & more at risk.”

“The EU strongly condemns extremist settler violence, as well as the expansion of illegal settlements,” Borrell wrote.

The top EU diplomat reiterated Israel’s duty to protect all civilians and to hold the perpetrators accountable.

He quoted independent media reports as saying that the last three partially operating hospitals in north Gaza are targeted “with an intensity rarely seen in modern warfare.”

He also warned that Israel’s move to ban the operations of UNRWA, the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees, may deprive millions of life-saving services.

“It is high time to stop violent settlers and destruction in the West Bank, and to put an end to the illegal occupation of Palestinian territories,” Borrell said.

Israel has ramped up its violence against the Palestinians in the West Bank since it launched the campaign of genocide in Gaza in October 2023.
