EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has reiterated the call for an "immediate ceasefire" in Lebanon, as the Israeli regime continues its aggression against the Arab country.

Speaking at a press conference at the 9th regional forum of the Union for the Mediterranean in the Spanish city of Barcelona on Monday, Borrell slammed the Israelis’ “unacceptable attacks” on United Nations peacekeepers stationed on the borders of Lebanon.

The 10,000-strong UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), manned with military troops recruited from the armed forces of some 50 countries, is tasked with monitoring a ceasefire that ended a 33-day war in 2006 between Israel and Lebanon’s resistance movement Hezbollah.

The body was first established as an interim force to confirm Israeli troops' withdrawal after occupying southern Lebanon back in 1978.

Borrell emphasized that the EU bloc is in favor of “an immediate ceasefire across the blue lines” UNIFIL monitors and the respect for the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

The European Union’s foreign policy chief has repeatedly called for an Israeli ceasefire in West Asia, warning the “critical” situation risks turning into a “full-blown war.”

Meanwhile, the Israeli forces' illegal attacks on Lebanon, which constitute a violation of international law, have placed the international peacekeepers stationed there to maintain peace and calm in the middle of an escalating armed conflict.

Since Tel Aviv unleashed the zionists' brutal war machine on the Lebanese people last month, the UNIFIL observers monitoring the situation have recorded a multitude of Israeli forces' violations.

Also, several UNIFL troops sustained injuries and the UN mission's facilities were damaged by the Israeli forces.

Tel Aviv’s killing machine launched the onslaught in West Asia, initiated by a genocidal war on defenseless Palestinians trapped in the besieged Gaza Strip, in October 2023.

The United States has backed the Israeli regime in carrying out the genocide in Gaza that has left more than 43,000 Palestinians dead, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

So far, all international efforts in favor of a ceasefire have been to no avail due to Washington’s unwavering support for the Tel Aviv regime.
