Iran’s foreign minister holds ‘constructive’ talks with Saudi counterpart

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi (L) holds talks with Saudi counterpart Faisal bin Farhan in Riyadh on October 9, 2024.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has held constructive discussions with his Saudi counterpart Prince Faisal bin Farhan in Riyadh.

“Both sides called for an immediate cessation of hostilities against Gaza and Lebanon and for humanitarian aid to be delivered to the displaced as quickly as possible,” Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmail Baghaei said in a post on X.

“The two ministers also reviewed the current status of bilateral relations and emphasized their shared commitment to strengthening cooperation in various political, security, and economic areas.”

Foreign Minister Araghchi arrived in the Saudi capital on Wednesday for talks on ways to end Israel’s genocidal campaign in Gaza and its psychopathic bombardment of Lebanon.

Araghchi referred to his recent trip to Lebanon and Syria. He underscored an immediate halt to Israel’s military operations in Gaza and Lebanon as essential to prevent escalating tensions.

The Iranian minister called for mobilizing all political resources and capacities of regional countries to stop the massacre of innocent people and the destruction of infrastructure in Gaza and Lebanon.

Prince Faisal emphasized the shared goal of both countries to maintain regional stability and security, expressing Saudi Arabia’s readiness to cooperate in that direction.

During the meeting, Araghchi reiterated Iran’s firm policy of continuing to expand relations with neighboring countries to enhance regional security, stability, and prosperity.

He placed a premium on implementing agreements signed by Iran and Saudi Arabia.

And the Saudi minister also highlighted his country’s commitment to continuing the progress made over the past year in strengthening bilateral relations.

Meanwhile, the Iranian foreign minister also met with Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman.

The trip to Riyadh came more than a week after Iran’s missile strike on the Israeli-occupied territory which was in retaliation for Israel’s cowardly assassination of Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas in Tehran, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah of Hezbollah and Iranian military advisor General Abbas Nilforoushan in Beirut.

In Beirut on Friday, Araghchi said Tehran supports efforts for a "simultaneous" ceasefire in Lebanon and Gaza.

Israel has massacred over 42,000 Palestinians in Gaza since October 2023.

The regime has also been bombarding Lebanon. At least 2,000 people have been killed.

The Israeli regime says it wants an end to Hezbollah’s Gaza solidarity operations, which have targeted the northern occupied territories for a year. But Hezbollah has vowed it won’t stop its attacks unless the genocide in Gaza stops.
