Palestinian journalist Hassan Hamad killed by Israeli assassination drone
Israeli forces have killed another defenseless Palestinian journalist after threatening him to stop news coverage in the Gaza Strip.
Hassan Hamad, 19, was targeted in his home in Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza on Sunday, weeks after receiving threatening messages warning him to stop reporting Israeli attacks on Palestinians.
Reports said Hasan was killed in an Israeli drone attack on his home in Jabalia.
Late on Saturday, Tel Aviv's war machine deployed forces in northern Gaza, sending tanks and troops into the Jabalia camp following a night of heavy air strikes. The Israeli forces' attack on Jabalia marked the third ground assault on Jabalia since the war on Gaza was launched a year ago.
Hamad had been reporting on the fresh Israeli incursion when he was targeted. His colleague, who knew Hamad’s X social media account, said that the deceased had been sending videos about the Israeli assault late into the night. During their last phone conversation at 6am (3am GMT), Hamad told his colleague, "There they are. There they are. It’s over!”
Before this, Hamad shared a screenshot with his colleagues of a threatening WhatsApp message he had received from an Israeli number.
The message, sent to Hamad a few weeks before his death, read, “Listen… If you continue spreading lies about Israel, we'll come for you next and turn your family into...! This is your last warning!!”
Covering the Gaza war has been especially risky for journalists.
Before Hamad’s death, the government media office in Gaza had put the death toll of killed journalists and media workers at 174.
Media workers have taken an unprecedented toll since Israel launched the war on Gazans following retaliatory Operation Al-Aqsa Storm on October 7, 2023.
Additionally, nearly 42,000 helpless Gazans, mostly women and children, have also been killed since then.
