Tehran urges UN Security Council intervention amid Israel’s Lebanon strikes

Smoke billows from the site of an Israeli airstrike on the outskirts of the southern village of Habbouch, Lebanon, September 23, 2024.

Iran has called for “immediate intervention” by the United Nations Security Council to prevent the recurrence of the situation in the besieged Gaza Strip in Lebanon.

“We are concerned about the repetition of disasters like those that happened in Gaza and Rafah, and therefore, we demand immediate intervention by the UN Security Council,” said Iranian government spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani during a press conference in Tehran on Tuesday.

In her statement, Mohajerani also referred to President Masoud Pezeshkian’s trip to New York, stating that it carries a message of “stable peace” to all nations despite the “full-scale genocide in Gaza” and the “disgusting and crazy behavior of a racist [Israeli] regime and its continued assaults on Lebanon.”

Her comments followed a day of heavy Israeli bombardment in Lebanon, which killed at least 558 people and left at least 1,800 injured, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry.

Meanwhile, President Pezeshkian, who is in New York to attend the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, condemned the Zionist regime for the bombardment of Lebanon and called for an immediate halt to the Israeli attacks.

In remarks on Monday, Pezeshkian demanded a “cessation of the Israeli occupation” in Palestine.

And speaking in an interview with CNN on Tuesday, Pezeshkian warned of the potential for the war to escalate. “There is a danger that the fire of what is happening in Lebanon could spread across the region.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also condemned Israeli actions in a post on X. “Israel’s crimes, enabled by the US, are crystal clear for the world to witness. Do not look away. This brutal and criminal disregard for human life cannot be allowed to continue.”

Araghchi concluded his post with, “Iran will NOT remain indifferent. We stand with the people of Lebanon and Palestine.”

Monday’s Israeli strikes marked the deadliest attacks in Lebanon since 2006.

In response, Hezbollah has launched rockets targeting Israeli military-industrial sites.
