US imposes new rights-related sanctions on Iran
The United States has imposed a new round of sanctions on Iran on accusations of human rights violations as Washington continues with its unsuccessful policy of pressuring Tehran into new political and military concessions.
The sanctions issued by the US Department of the Treasury on Wednesday targeted 12 individuals from Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC), officials of Iran’s Prisons Organization, and people it claimed were responsible for Iran’s operations against opposition figures based overseas.
The Treasury said the sanctions had been coordinated with governments of Canada and Australia after they announced human rights-related sanctions against Iran on the second anniversary of the riots that started in Iran in September 2023 after the death of a young woman in police custody.
It said individuals designated by the sanctions had also been involved in efforts to control the protests that followed fuel price hikes in Iran in November 2019.
The designations included five IRGC commanders and two individuals linked to the elite military force, three director-generals of provincial prison departments, one prison warden and one intelligence ministry official.
They became subject to asset freeze rules in the US, the Treasury said, adding that US persons were prohibited from having any dealings with the individuals.
The sanctions come despite repeated assertions from Iran that unilateral bans imposed by Washington and allies in recent years would not change fundamental policies or religious practices of the country.
Iran has been under a raft of economic sanctions since 2018 when the US withdrew from an international deal on the country’s nuclear program.
Experts say the sanctions are aimed at forcing Iran to change its political and military behavior and to withdraw its support from regional resistance groups that oppose the US and Israel.
