Jordan’s king appoints new prime minister after parliamentary election
Jordan's King Abdullah II has appointed Jafar Hassan to replace Bisher Khasawneh as the kingdom's new prime minister.
The Jordanian palace announced the news in an official statement on Sunday, after the outgoing premier submitted his resignation to the king earlier in the day
The statement went on to say that King Abdullah has tasked Hassan with forming a new government, following the parliamentary election earlier this week.
He also urged Hassan to "mobilize all efforts to support the steadfastness” of Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip, the occupied West Bank and al-Quds, the statement said.
King Abdullah also called on Hassan to use "all our energy through Arab and international movements to protect the Palestinian people and stop the attacks and blatant violations of humanitarian principles and international law," it added.
Hassan, 56, previously served as planning minister and chief of staff to the king.
On Tuesday, Jordanians cast their ballots in a highly anticipated parliamentary election set to shape the 20th House of Representatives. The elections drew unprecedented attention with a record number of candidates eager to influence the country’s future.
The Independent Election Commission announced the results on Wednesday, with the Islamic Action Front making strong gains in the elections, securing 31 of the total 138 seats.
The pro-Palestine Islamic Action Front is one of the leading parties, which is set to reshape the political landscape in the Arab country.
