Iranian athletes win three silver medals at Paris Paralympics

Iranian athletes have won three silver medals at the Paris Paralympics 2024, two of them after their appeal of the initial decisions vaulted them to second places.

Zafar Zaker, the Iranian shot putter, bagged a silver medal in men’s shotput-F55 at Stade de France in the north of Paris on Friday after Iranian authorities lodged an appeal in protest at the performance of two other shot putters from Serbia and Poland, who had won a silver and bronze medal, respectively.

Zaker had registered a record of 11.88 meters and ranked fourth at the sports event but after the appeal was approved, he was upgraded to the second place and made the cut for a silver.

In a similar development, Parastoo Habibi bagged a silver medal in women’s club throw-F32 in athletics on Friday night.

Habibi initially finished in third place with a throw of 26.29 meters. Gold medal went to Poland’s athlete Roza Kozakowska with 31.30, and Tunisian Maroua Ibrahmi won the silver with 29.00 meters, but Habibi claimed the silver medal after the revision.

On Thursday night, Taekwondo practitioner Zahra Rahimi won a silver medal at the Paralympic Games in the French capital, the first medal for the Iranian sports delegation.

Rahimi enjoyed an emphatic run to the women’s -52kg K44 final on the first day of action in Paris, only to fall short against Mongolian Surenjav Ulambayar.

The 15-year-old began her campaign in Grand Palais with a 13-2 victory over China’s Shao Qian and then defeated Brazilian Maria Machado Stumpf 6-4 to reach the last four.

Iran has sent 65 athletes in 10 sports titles to the Paris Paralympics 2024.
