Iran, Turkmenistan sign key MoUs on natural gas, transportation
Iran and Turkmenistan have agreed to significantly expand their cooperation on energy and transportation issues as the two neighboring countries seek to benefit more from their strategic location in the region.
Four memoranda of understanding (MoU) were signed between Iran and Turkmenistan on Wednesday during a visit by Turkmenistan’s National Leader Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow to Tehran.
Berdimuhamedow is the first foreign leader visiting Iran since Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s cabinet took office last Wednesday after a vote of confidence in the Iranian parliament.
Pezeshkian described the MoUs signed during Berdimuhamedow’s visit as “strategic” while saying that a document signed between state gas companies of Iran and Turkmenistan will turn Iran into a gas transfer hub in the region.
That comes as the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) and Türkmengaz have already signed deals on swap of Turkmenistan’s gas to Azerbaijan and Iraq via Iran.
No details have been released of the gas cooperation MoU signed between Iran and Turkmenistan on Wednesday. However, the Tasnim news agency said in a report that the agreement could serve as a framework for future gas import and swap activities between the two countries.
Iranian and Turkmen officials also agreed on a roadmap for increased cooperation on transportation.
The official IRNA news agency said that Iran and Turkmenistan had agreed to start negotiations to reach a comprehensive deal on transportation issues, adding that talks are expected to kick off next month as part of an intergovernmental committee chaired by Iran’s transportation minister.
The MoUs signed on Wednesday also included a sisterhood agreement between two Caspian Sea ports of Amirabad in Iran and Turkmenbashi in Turkmenistan, an agreement to boost cooperation between customs administrations and a political cooperation agreement between foreign ministries of the two countries.
