Ukrainian shelling of the Rakitnoye town in Russia’s Belgorod region killed five civilians and injured 12 more, the region’s governor said on Sunday.

Vyacheslav Gladkov, Russia’s Belgorod Region Governor, said on the Telegram messaging app that there are three children among the injured.

“The Ukrainian Armed Forces carried out a brutal terrorist strike at the settlement of Rakitnoye in the middle of the night. To our great grief, the enemy strike took the lives of 5 civilians. […] 12 people, including 3 minors, were injured in the shelling,” Gladkov said.

The governor added that nine of the injured were hospitalized, with six of them listed in serious condition, including a 16-year-old girl who is in intensive care.

The governor assured that all of the injured civilians were receiving medical aid in hospitals.

He said in addition to 10 private households and 4 cars, a gas pipeline was damaged in the attack, leaving three nearby settlements without gas supply.

The electricity power lines were also targeted in the attack, he added.

The governor said emergency operations had started to restore the damaged services to work as soon as possible.

Russia says destroyed Ukrainian drone

The Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement on Saturday that Russian air defenses destroyed a Ukrainian drone over the Belgorod Region last night.

“The Kiev regime’s attempt to carry out a terrorist attack on targets in Russia using a fixed-wing drone was foiled last night. On-duty air defenses destroyed the Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicle over the Belgorod Region,” the statement reads.

The US-led Western countries have been flooding the Ukrainian armed forces with an unending supply of Western weapons and ammunition since Russia launched its military campaign in Donbas in 2022.

Nonetheless, the former Soviet republic has failed to gain significant military objectives in the proxy war against Russia with Kiev constantly whining about a shortage of weapons and ammunition.
