Chinese embassy celebrates 53rd anniversary of Iran-China relations

The Chinese embassy in Tehran has held a ceremony to celebrate the 53rd anniversary of the formal establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Iran.

China’s Ambassador to Tehran Cong Peiwu, the chairman of the Iran-China Friendship Association, Alaeddin Boroujerdi, and a senior Iranian lawmaker, as well as other association members attended the event on Thursday.

During the event, Boroujerdi praised the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement between the two countries, stressing that Iran's new administration is determined to promote bilateral relations.

The countries signed the landmark 25-year partnership agreement in March 2021 in a bid to strengthen their long-standing economic and political alliance.

The deal, which had been announced during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Tehran back in 2016, sets the outlines of Sino-Iranian cooperation in political, cultural, security, defense, regional, and international domains for the period in question.

Boroujerdi also expressed his hope that Iran's role in China’s giant New Silk Road project, also known as the Belt and Road Initiative, “would be clearly defined and anticipated significant practical steps forward,” Xinhua News Agency reported.

For his part, Cong noted that the friendship between China and Iran has strengthened over the years, highlighting that the relationship dates back over 2,000 years.

He noted that the bilateral ties between the two countries have significantly advanced.

Cong added that mutual political trust has deepened and people-to-people and cultural exchanges have also increased.

China is Iran’s largest trade partner. Both countries are subject to different levels of illegal sanctions imposed by the United States.

Diplomatic ties between Beijing and Tehran were formally established on August 16, 1971.
