Pakistan: Iran has right to self-defense in face of Israeli terrorism

Pakistan’s Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch

Pakistan has said Iran has a right to defend itself in the face of the Israeli regime's terrorism.

Speaking at a weekly briefing in Islamabad on Friday, Pakistan’s Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch expressed concern about the evolving situation in the West Asia region, particularly Israel’s genocidal war in the Gaza Strip over the past 10 months and the regime’s assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the political bureau of the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas in Tehran late last in July.

“Iran has every right to defend itself,” she said, calling for accountability for Israel's actions.

Haniyeh was assassinated on July 31, while he was in Tehran to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian.

Iranian political and military leadership, including the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, and President Masoud Pezeshkian, have vowed to avenge Haniyeh's blood.

The Pakistani government declared one day of mourning following the assassination.

The Pakistani Foreign Office spokesperson also condemned Israel’s ongoing atrocities in Gaza, noting the high civilian casualties.

She emphasized that Israel should be held accountable for the genocide in Gaza.

Baloch reiterated Pakistan's support for a ceasefire in Gaza, saying her country welcomes any steps towards the establishment of a ceasefire in the war-ravaged strip.

Pakistan, however, is not involved in new talks on a ceasefire in Gaza, she said.

More than 40,000 Palestinians, mostly children and women, have been killed in the war that Israel began on October 7, 2023 following a retaliatory operation by the Palestinian territory’s resistance movements.

The brutal military onslaught enjoys unreserved military and political support on the part of the Israeli regime’s Western allies, including the United States and France.
