South Koreans have taken to the streets to protest Israel's ongoing genocide in Gaza, calling for an immediate ceasefire and the liberation of Palestinians from Israeli occupation.

Supporters of Palestinians from across South Korea rallied in the capital Seoul as the country marked its liberation from Japan after World War Two in 1945. Protest leaders from Palestine reminded participants that Israel's genocide continues.

We must not forget the horrific atrocities committed by Israel, especially in the Gaza Strip, Israel recently bombed another school and is now sending ground troops again into Khan Younis.

A wide spectrum of people joined the protest, with the US recently approving billions of dollars more military aid for Israel, many Americans now recognize their government's complicity.

How can the US claim to be pushing for a cease fire while arming the aggressor? This is the contradiction that emboldens Israel as it makes Gaza a wasteland and calls it peace. The US is not a mediator in this so called conflict. It is partner in genocide.

There is much display of pro-Americanism as the country marks its 79th Liberation Day, although South Koreans remain divided on the US role in the peninsula.

Part of South Korea's sympathy for the Palestinian cause stems from its historical and contemporary experiences.

From 1910 to 1945, Korea was colonized by Japan, and today the country remains divided, with tens of thousands of US forces being stationed here, who some view as occupiers.

South Koreans recognize the cost of their freedom.

Many of the great people who are respected in South Korea are those who fought against Japan with arms, and they are not much different from the Palestinians who are fighting in the Gaza Strip right now.

Despite threats from Israel to further broaden the violence to other states, the participants voiced hope for a ceasefire, and ultimately liberation for Palestine.
