Iran’s new cabinet to include well-known economic figures

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian

President Masoud Pezeshkian has reportedly named key figures to lead Iran's economic ministries amid his plans to improve the economic situation in the country.

The semi-official Tasnim News Agency published a list of 19 proposed ministers who will serve under Pezeshkian if they can win the confidence of the Iranian parliament after 10 days of debates that will start on Sunday.

The list included seasoned politicians and statesmen as well as well-known economic figures.

The report said Pezeshkian had named Seyyed Emad Hosseini to lead Iran’s economically-significant Oil Ministry.

Hosseini, a former parliament lawmaker representing Iran’s Kurdish communities, served as a deputy oil minister under a former government that left office in 2021.

His main missions as oil minister will be to increase Iran's crude oil output and exports amid sanctions imposed on the country as well as to boost natural gas production to respond to a growing domestic demand for energy.

Iran’s former central bank governor Abdolnasser Hemmati has been named to become Iran’s new Minister of Economic Affairs and Finance, showed the list published by Tasnim.

Major challenges facing Hemamti as finance minister will be to introduce better fiscal and monetary policies that could lead to lower inflation in Iran as well as to control the country’s volatile stock markets.

Seyyed Mohammad Atabak, an old entrepreneur who is less known in Iran’s political circles, has been named to lead Iran’s Ministry of Industry, Mine and Trade (MIMT).

The MIMT is a large ministry responsible for Iran’s domestic manufacturing, metals and mining sector and foreign trade.

Analyses published by local news agencies suggested Atabak has low chances of winning Iranian parliament’s confidence vote because of challenges facing the MIMT as well as his age and health issues.

Incumbent minister in charge of the MIMT Abbas Ali Abadi has been named by Pezehkian to take over as head of the country’s Energy Ministry, showed the report by Tasnim.
