Sinwar’s election as Hamas chief shows resistance ready for more intense battles: MP

By Alireza Hashemi

The appointment of Yahya Sinwar as the new Hamas political bureau leader sends a clear message to the Zionist regime that Gaza's resistance is prepared for more intense battles if the genocide continues, says a senior Iranian lawmaker.

Speaking to the Press TV website, Ebrahim Rezaee, the spokesman for the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, said the Gaza-based resistance front welcomes a ceasefire but is also ready for a stronger confrontation with the regime.

“Concurrent with the ceasefire talks, Netanyahu tries to continue the war and maintain the status quo until the US presidential elections, as he knows that reducing tensions and ending the war would mean the fall of his cabinet,” Rezaee stated.

“The appointment of Sinwar indicates that while the resistance welcomes an end to the genocidal war, it will continue to fight the regime even more powerfully if tensions persist.”

Sinwar, who previously served as Hamas chief in Gaza, was appointed as the movement’s new politburo leader on Tuesday, nearly a week after his predecessor Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in an Israeli attack on his residence in Tehran.

Sinwar, a co-founder of Hamas's security apparatus, has been leading the resistance movement in the Gaza Strip since February 2017 and has been described as the mastermind of Operation Al-Aqsa Storm.

In a statement, the Gaza-based resistance movement said that after "extensive and comprehensive consultations and deliberations," it was decided that Sinwar would succeed Haniyeh.

"Hamas expresses its confidence in brother Abu Ibrahim as its leader during this sensitive phase and the complex local, regional, and international circumstances," read the statement.

Rezaee emphasized that Sinwar's appointment demonstrates that the Palestinian resistance remains robust despite more than 300 days of genocidal war on the besieged Palestinian territory.

“Despite months of war and assassination attempts by the Zionists, the main leaders of the resistance are not only alive but have also entrusted leadership and political responsibilities to those who
designed the Al-Aqsa Storm,” he told the Press TV website.

“The assassination of Ismail Haniyeh was a shock, but Sinwar's appointment shows that the resistance is not dependent on any one person; if one leader falls, another will take their place.”

The senior lawmaker added that Sinwar's appointment also pointed to Israel's failure to achieve its goal of eliminating the Hamas resistance movement in Gaza.

“The Zionists have tried to defeat the Palestinians by dropping tens of thousands of tons of bombs on them. Their strategic mistake is thinking they can eliminate the resistance mentality with missiles. Missiles cannot destroy the resistance,” he stressed.

“This aligns with the statement by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution in the early days of the Al-Aqsa Storm operations, that the Zionist regime has suffered an irreparable defeat,” he hastened to add.
