Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has underscored Iran’s right to retaliation in the wake of Israel's recent assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.
The Iraian president made the remarks in a phone conversation with French President Emanuel Macron, who had requested for Iran to show restraint in the face of the terrorist attack that killed Haniyeh last week.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran has always played a pivotal role in creating peace, stability, and security in the region and the world and in preventing tension, insecurity, and war,” Pezeshkian said.
"However, the Zionist regime, with its criminal and terrorist actions against the oppressed and defenseless people of Gaza and the assassination of martyr Haniyeh as an official guest of Iran, seeks to ignite the region," he said.
"Unfortunately, the United States and Western countries, instead of condemning this regime, support it in committing crimes, genocide, and terrorism."
He said the West should immediately stop supporting the Zionist regime if it really wants to prevent the spread of insecurity in the region.
The Iranian president said the US and its allies in the West have failed to condemn the Israeli attack on Iran’s embassy in Damascus in April and the assassination of Haniyeh, describing their behavior as a clear example of double standard.
Pezeshkian lamented that the West supports a regime that does not adhere to any international laws and regulations and does not refrain from any criminal actions in the region, and at the same time invites the countries targeted by such actions to refrain from responding and to exercise restraint.
Pezeshkian said as long as the Zionist regime, with the political, financial, military, and media support of the US and Western countries, engages in genocide, crimes, and terrorism, the region and the world will not see stability, security, and peace.
“If the United States and Western countries truly seek to prevent war and insecurity in the region, they must immediately stop selling weapons and supporting the Zionist regime and force it to stop the genocide and attacks on Gaza and accept a ceasefire.”
The Iranian president said Tehran does not seek war and strives to promote global peace, but it will never remain silent in the face of aggression against its interests and security.
