The appointment of Yahya Sinwar as the new political leader of the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas after the Israeli assassination of Ismail Haniyeh has drawn in applause from various regional resistance groups, who described his selection as "the best successor to the best predecessor."

The Gaza-based Islamic Jihad movement said in a statement, “We congratulate our brothers in Hamas for selecting commander Yahya Sinwar as the head of its political bureau.”

“The success of our brothers in Hamas in conducting internal consultations and filling the vacancy in the political bureau leadership after the assassination of the martyr leader Ismail Haniyeh … with such a speed, despite … the war against them is a strong message to the Zionist enemy that Hamas remains strong and cohesive, and that the enemy has not affected its structure despite the war of extermination.”

The Islamic Jihad wished Sinwar and Hamas “success in proceeding towards achieving the goals of the Palestinian people in liberation [of their land], return [of Palestinians to their homeland], and the expulsion of the occupation [entity].”

Haniyeh was killed in an attack on his accommodation in the Iranian capital of Tehran on July 31, a day after he attended the swearing-in ceremony of Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian.

Sinwar, a high-ranking Hamas military commander, took the helm as the leader of Hamas in the besieged Gaza Strip in February 2017.

The 61-year-old was a key architect of the surprise Operation al-Aqsa Storm that Hamas-led resistance groups launched against the Tel Aviv regime last October in response to its decades-long campaign of oppression and devastation against Palestinians.

‘Most eloquent response to Zionist barbarism’

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) also congratulated Hamas on electing Sinwar as its political bureau head, affirming its confidence in the ability of the resistance movement “to overcome the great ordeal represented by the martyrdom of brother Ismail Haniyeh, and to continue his path and the path of all the martyred leaders.”

The PFLP wished the new chief and his fellow leaders in Hamas “success in bearing this great responsibility as the successor to the martyred Ismail Haniyeh, and to continue leading the movement in a manner that serves to defend our people and their rights in this critical phase.”

The PFLP also stressed that Hamas's decision to choose Sinwar as the head of its political bureau is a message of strength that reflects the movement's cohesion, unity of stance, and the resilience of its institutions.

“It is a scorching message to the Zionist enemy, with connotations affirming that the choice of resistance is the most eloquent response to the Zionist enemy's barbarism, Nazism, and genocidal war against our people,” it added.

‘The best successor to best predecessor’

The Popular Resistance Committees, which is a coalition of a number of Palestinian resistance groups, also praised the appointment of Sinwar and wished Hamas success in the fight against the Israeli regime under the new leadership.

“The fighter leader Yahya al-Sinwar is the best successor to the best predecessor. We wish him success and hope that God will grant victory to our people and our resistance through him, and [we will] defeat the Nazi Zionist entity,” the coalition said.

“The selection of the leader Abu Ibrahim al-Sinwar…is a significant blow to the malicious plans of the Zionist enemy and is part of the punishment and response to the assassination of the leader Abu al-Abd Haniyeh.”

The coalition underlined that the Palestinian resistance, led by Hamas and spearheaded by Sinwar, “will remain committed to the blood of all martyrs, to the sacrifices of our people, and, as a symbol of adherence, to our rights, principles, and sacred sites until the liberation of our land from the sea to the river.”

‘Achieve all goals, no matter high costs’

Palestine’s Ahrar Movement also felicitated Hamas on the appointment of its new commander and said the selection of Sinwar is a message from Hamas that Operation al-Aqsa Storm is a “strategic and sovereign decision for the resistance factions and that we are moving forward to achieve all its goals and objectives, no matter the high costs.”

Ahrar Movement underscored, “The policy of assassinations adopted by the Zionist enemy will not make the resistance compromise on the freedom of the Gaza Strip in negotiations … and it will not include in the decision-making circle the individuals [who are] willing to accept the Israeli presence in the Gaza Strip. On the contrary, it will bring to the decision-making circle the individuals who may be tougher, more determined, and steadfast.”

‘Message of strength and defiance’

The media office of the Palestinian Mujahideen Movement condemned the targeted killing of Haniyeh as a “cowardly Zionist assassination.”

“The speed and success of the process in selecting the leader of Hamas is a message of strength defying the Zionist enemy, which attempted to create a vacuum and internal confusion,” the movement said.

“However, the movement has demonstrated its cohesion and ability to overcome hardships, particularly the great loss of the martyr leader Ismail Haniyeh, during these critical times facing our entire Palestinian people and the genocide being perpetrated by the Zionist enemy against the steadfast Gaza Strip.”

It prayed for Hamas and its fighters in continuing their path until achieving the goals and aspirations of Palestinian people to liberate their land, end the occupation, reclaim all rights, and recover their entire land.

'Sinwar knows language of resistance'

Ziad al-Saghir, secretary general of Fatah al-Intifada Movement, commended the election of Sinwar as an “important step.”

“He represents the Palestinian fighting face against the Zionist project, and he is a revolutionary in the trenches and tunnels who knows only the language of resistance, which will restore the land and rights to our heroic Palestinian people," Saghir said about the new Hamas chief.

"We congratulate the leadership, cadres, and fighters of Hamas on this election, considering it to be an advanced step to enhance the resistant role of our national Palestinian movement [we will be] together until victory and the complete liberation of all the usurped Palestinian land."
