Top Russian security official arrives in Iran amid heightened regional tension

Russia's Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu

Russia's Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu arrives in Tehran to hold talks with top Iranian officials amid acute tensions in the region following Israel’s assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, head of the political bureau of the Hamas resistance movement last week.

During his day-long stay in Tehran on Monday, Shoigu plans to meet Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian, Secretary of Supreme National Security Council Ali Akbar Ahmadian and Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Baqeri.

Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran on July 31 while he was in Tehran to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Iran’s President Pezeshkian.

The talks will focus on promotion of a broad range of bilateral cooperation, including security, trade and economic projects, and various aspects of global and regional security, the Russian Security Council said.

Earlier on Monday, Iran said Israel’s assassination of Haniyeh was a "blatant violation" of international rules and regulations, reiterating Tehran’s inherent right to punish the aggressor.
