Iran: Strategic balance in region won’t change in favor of Israel

Iran says Israel’s brutality and war crimes as well as cowardly acts of terror in the region will never lead to a change in the “strategic balance” in Palestine.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kan’ani made the remarks in a post on his X account on Sunday after Israeli airstrikes on two schools sheltering displaced people in Gaza City killed at least 30 Palestinians and injured more than 100 others.

“Despite the Zionists’ terrible brutality, war crimes and genocide in Palestine as well as cowardly assassinations in the region, the strategic balance in the Palestinian territories and across the region will never change in favor of the Zionist regime and its delusional supporters,” Kan’ani said.

He added that the anger of free nations in the world will backfire on the “Zionist criminals and their supporters."

Mahmoud Basal, the spokesman of the Palestinian Civil Defence in Gaza, said in a statement on Sunday that Israel’s attacks targeted the Hassan Salama and Al-Nasr schools west of Gaza City.

“Around 80% of the victims are children,” he added as he described the scenes at the two bombed schools as “tragic.”

The Iranian spokesman’s post also came less than a week after the Israeli regime carried out two acts of assassination-- killing Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the political bureau of the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas in Tehran on Wednesday, and Fuad Shukr, a senior military commander of Lebanon’s Hezbollah resistance movement, in Beirut on Tuesday.

Haniyeh was in Tehran to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Iran's newly-elected President Masoud Pezeshkian, alongside other Axis of Resistance leaders. He was assassinated along with his bodyguard, identified as Wasim Abu Shaaban, by the Israeli regime.

Shukr, who had an important role in the formation and consolidation of the resistance front against the Israeli occupation, was also martyred along with two children and two women in the attack on a residential apartment in Dahieh.

At least 39,583 Palestinians, mostly children and women, have been killed and 91,398 people wounded in the war that Israel began on October 7, 2023, following a retaliatory operation by the Palestinian territory’s resistance movements.
