Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf says Iran’s “crushing and smart response” to Israel and the US will make them regret the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.
He made the remarks on Sunday, four days after Israel with the support of the US assassinated Haniyeh, the head of the political bureau of the Palestinian Hamas resistance group, who was in Tehran to attend Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian's swearing-in ceremony.
The terrorist act followed another assassination by the Zionist regime that targeted Fuad Shukr, a senior commander of the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah, in Beirut.
“The sweet taste of a celebration of religious democracy … [in] the Islamic Republic turned bitter by the martyrdom of operational and political commanders of the resistance, particularly Ismail Haniyeh, who was our guest,” he said during an open parliamentary session.
“Undoubtedly, the Islamic Republic's crushing and smart response will leave a sweet taste in the mouth of the people and resistance forces, as well as the world’s freedom seekers, and will make this regime, especially its supporter – i.e. the US – regret their act.”
Qalibaf further noted that Iran’s response to Haniyeh’s assassination will also “force them (Israel and the US) to reform their calculating system so that they don’t repeat their mistake that is harmful to their own security and regional peace.”
Israel cannot portray its “passive terrorist acts” as a success through psychological operations as Hamas’s October 7 Operation Al-Aqsa Storm marked the beginning of an end to Israel’s existence, he added.
The top parliamentarian also said that the Iranian legislature calls for a deterrent reaction that preserves the country’s national interests.
“Our powerful military forces … will give to this terrorist enemy and its deceitful supporter, the United States, a historic lesson,” he emphasized.
Meanwhile, Qalibaf called on nations across the globe to join hands and defend the rights of the oppressed Palestinians against the ominous alliance of the Western governments with the criminal occupying regime.
Iran’s response to Israel will be ‘painful and agonizing’: Lawmaker
Additionally, on Sunday, Ebrahim Azizi, head of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of the Iranian Parliament, said that Israel will never forget Iran’s response to its assassination of the Hamas leader.
“Undoubtedly, Iran's response to this act of the Zionist regime will be regret-inducing, painful and agonizing, … [something] that it will not forget forever,” he told IRNA news agency.
Haniyeh’s martyrdom, the lawmaker pointed out, will make the resistance front stronger and more steadfast.
