Massive protest in Sana'a condemns assassination of Hamas leader Haniyeh
Thousands of protesters gathered in Sana'a on Wednesday to condemn the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and show solidarity with the Palestinian people.
Footage from the Yemeni capital shows protesters marching through the streets. Demonstrators carried signs and chanted anti-Israeli and anti-US slogans. The protests followed reports that Haniyeh was killed by an Israeli rocket attack on his residence while he was in Tehran attending the inauguration of Iran's new President Masoud Pezeshkian.
Hamas confirmed the assassination in a statement, mourning Haniyeh and his companion. Israel has not claimed responsibility for the attack or issued a comment as of the time of publication.
The Palestinian Authority and Iran have declared three days of mourning, and the assassination has been condemned by various countries and groups, including Russia, China, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Qatar, the Taliban, Hezbollah, and the Yemen's Ansarullah. The White House has acknowledged reports of Haniyeh's death.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had previously indicated that Mossad operations against Hamas leaders were part of Israel’s strategy.
Ismail Haniyeh was a founding member of Hamas in 1987 and served in several key roles, including as the group's political bureau head and prime minister of the Palestinian government after Hamas’s 2006 electoral victory.
