Leader underscores implementation of Iran-Iraq agreements

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei (R) receives Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani (C) in the capital Tehran on July 30, 2024.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has placed a premium on the need to pursue the implementation of bilateral agreements signed between Iran and Iraq during the administration of late President Ebrahim Raeisi.

Ayatollah Khamenei made the remarks on Tuesday during a meeting with Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani of Iraq and his accompanying delegation.

The Leader pointed to the memorandums and documents signed between the two countries during the previous Iranian administration.

The Leader also expressed his satisfaction with the Iraqi government's action in tackling the problems in Iraq, while appreciating the existing coordination and cooperation among the Iraqi political factions.

Ayatollah Khamenei also thanked the Iraqi government and nation for their hospitality toward Iranian pilgrims, hailing Baghdad’s measures to ensure the security of pilgrims during Arba’een, an annual event which marks the 40th day after the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hossein, the third Shia Imam.

Sudani, for his part, expressed hope that the agreements reached between Iran and Iraq be implemented in the new administration, as he congratulated the election of Masoud Pezeshkian as the ninth president of Iran.

He also appreciated Iran’s stances on the crimes committed by the Israeli regime in the Gaza Strip, saying "The Zionist regime has crossed all international and humanitarian red lines" and that the Iraqi government is in constant contact with countries that share a same stance against the occupying regime’s crimes.

The Iraqi prime minister said the grand annual procession of Arba’een in Iraq is an opportunity to take a stance against the crimes of Israel and to acquaint Muslims, particularly the youth, with the principles and teachings of Imam Hossein's uprising against oppressors.

Sudani and his delegation were in Tehran to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the new Iranian president.
