Gaza's civil defense agency says an Israeli incursion in and around Khan Yunis has killed about 300 people over the past few days.

The Civil Defense spokesman Mahmud Bassal said on Tuesday  that the number of martyrs in Khan Younis had surpassed initial expectations, with at least 300 confirmed people killed by Israeli forces.

"Since the beginning of the Israeli ground invasion of the eastern part of Khan Yunis province, the civil defense and medical teams have recovered approximately 300 bodies of martyrs, many of them decomposed," agency spokesman Mahmud Bassal was quoted as saying on Tuesday.

The agency said dozens of bodies were found in Bani Suhaila following the retreat of Israeli forces from areas east of Khan Yunis. Efforts are ongoing to recover additional bodies, as the roads have been closed and 90 percent of the infrastructure has been destroyed.

The agency has accused Israeli forces of preventing the retrieval of the wounded, resulting in their death and decomposition of their bodies.

The death toll could be much higher, with 200 reports of missing Palestinians in eastern Khan Yunis.

“Our crews are still searching for missing persons,” the agency said.

Palestinians in Khan Yunis are setting up tents on their destroyed homes. Many are returning to Khan Yunis after being forcibly displaced last week by an Israeli assault.

The incursion displaced at least 180,000 Palestinians in the first four days, with many forced to leave their belongings behind, according to the United Nations.

After nine days of bombardment, the Israeli military left trails of devastation and destruction to all means of life, including public facilities, social services and facilities across the city.

People who are making their way to their residential homes are describing what they are seeing as “horrific”.
