Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Navy has seized a Togo-flagged tanker attempting to smuggle hundreds of liters of oil out of the country, in a second such confiscation operation in a week.

The seizure was announced in a statement issued by the Navy’s regional maritime security division, the IRGC's Sepah News outlet reported on Monday.

According to the statement, the confiscation had taken place on Friday as the vessel was loading up smuggled oil from Iranian dhows in the vicinity of the Arash Oilfield in the northern part of the Persian Gulf.

It named the vessel in question as “Pearl G,” and the owner as a Dubai-based Iraqi national.

The tanker, which was carrying nine Indian crewmembers and as much as 700,000 liters of smuggled oil at the time of the confiscation, was then towed away to the port city of Imam Khomeini in the southwestern Iranian province of Khuzestan.

Last Monday, the IRGC Navy reported seizing a similar vessel carrying over 1.5 million liters of smuggled fuel off the coast of the southern port city of Bushehr.

Late in January, the Navy had likewise confiscated a foreign tanker carrying two million liters of smuggled fuel in the southern waters.

The IRGC is closely engaged in maintaining the security of the body of water, which hosts the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow 21-mile-wide channel that is used to transport a fifth of the world's petroleum liquids.
